Legal Framework for Archival Records
As of January 1, 2009, a new personal status law has taken effect in Turkey. According to this law, older records are stored in archives:
-
Birth registers older than 110 years (until 1909)
-
Marriage records older than 80 years (until 1939)
-
Death records older than 30 years (until 1989)
These records are kept in state archives. We can request archival copies of entries, which may only be available in Turkish. These documents are generally accepted in procedures related to Turkish citizenship.
Please note: Archive searches may take several weeks. This process cannot be expedited, and some archives charge additional search fees, especially when exact dates are unknown. We will inform you in advance if such fees apply. If you choose not to proceed, your payment will be fully refunded.
